Fire Safety Tips:
Inside the home
Smoke Detectors and Escape Plans:
Install smoke detectors on every level of the home, and ouside each regular sleeping area
Test smoke alarms each month, and replace batteries that are one year old
Plan and escape route with your family, and be sure there are 2 ways out of every room; find a metting place outside the house
Heaters:
Keep one meter of clear space around heaters
Make sure to unplug heaters before sleeping
Cooking:
Never leave it unattended and leave a timer to remind yourself
Wear tight fitting clothing and roll up sleves

Outside the home
General Yard Safety:
Thin trees so that about 3 metres of space remains between them
Remove smaller trees and brush growing under trees
Perform cleanup regularily, removing and disposing needles, twigs, shrubs and other flamable debris
Stack firewood at least 10 metres away from a structure, and never downhill
Roofs, Siding, Balconies and Decks:
Have fire resistant roofing material - metal, clay or concrete tile, asphalt shingle
Clear over-hanging branches, and clear debris and combustible material off the roof
Construct any deck supports of non-combustible materials - heavy timbers are more fire resistant
Siding should be composed of fire resistant materials such as stucco, metal, brick, cement shingles with a minimum of 12 millimetres (1/2 inch) think that extends from ground level to roof line
